Sawdust Collection Ducts by EKG M&E Sdn Bhd

In the woodworking and furniture manufacturing hubs of Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, and Nilai, sawdust is more than a nuisance—it is a significant fire hazard and a contributor to poor indoor air quality. Sawdust Collection Ducts are the critical infrastructure designed to transport wood waste from machines like CNC routers, panel saws, and sanders to a central collector. Because wood dust varies from heavy chips to fine, explosive flour, the ducting must be engineered to maintain a specific Minimum Transport Velocity to prevent material from settling.

EKG M&E Sdn Bhd specializes in the design and installation of self-cleaning sawdust extraction networks that comply with DOSH LEV (Local Exhaust Ventilation) standards and the EECA 2024 energy mandates.

Engineering for Wood Waste Transport

Effective sawdust ducting requires a balance between air volume and velocity to ensure the system remains clog-free.

1. Maintaining Minimum Transport Velocity (MTV)

Wood dust requires high kinetic energy to stay suspended in the air stream.

  • The Velocity Standard: We design our networks to maintain a constant 18 to 22 m/s throughout every branch. If the velocity drops below this threshold, sawdust will settle in horizontal runs, creating a "fuel bed" for potential duct fires.

  • Smooth-Bore Interior: We utilize Clamp-Together or Fully Welded ducting. Unlike traditional spiral ducts, these methods eliminate internal screws and rivets that act as "snags" for stringy wood fibers.

2. Flow-Optimized Geometry

To minimize energy-robbing turbulence, we follow strict geometric protocols:

  • Long-Radius Sweeps: We avoid 90° elbows. Our turns utilize a radius of 1.5x to 2.5x the diameter, allowing wood chips to glide around turns with minimal impact and friction.

  • 45° Lateral Wyes: Branch lines enter the main header at a 45° angle or less. This ensures the two air streams merge smoothly, preserving the momentum of the sawdust.

Critical Operational & Safety Benefits

As a specialized M&E contractor, EKG ensures your sawdust system supports both plant safety and the bottom line:

  • TNB Energy Efficiency (VFD Calibration):

Woodworking fans are major electricity consumers. By utilizing ultra-smooth internal walls and Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs), we minimize static pressure. This allows the fan to maintain required velocities at lower frequencies, directly reducing your monthly TNB electricity bill.

  • Combustible Dust Safety (ATEX/NFPA):

Fine sawdust is highly explosive. We integrate Explosion Isolation Valves and high-integrity grounding to ensure your ducting does not facilitate a secondary dust explosion. Our designs also include Spark Detection systems that can extinguish a spark before it reaches the baghouse.

  • DOSH LEV Compliance:

We engineer the system to ensure constant "Capture Velocity" at the machine hood. This ensures your facility passes annual Local Exhaust Ventilation (LEV) certifications and keeps indoor particulate levels within legal safety limits.

Performance Matrix: Standard vs. EKG Sawdust Ducting

Feature Standard "Off-the-Shelf" Ducting EKG Industrial Sawdust Ducting
Material Gauge 0.5mm (Lightweight) 0.8mm – 1.6mm (Heavy-Duty)
Internal Surface Protruding Screws/Rivets Smooth-Bore (Snag-Free)
Joint Type Slip-fit / Tape Clamp-Together / Fully Welded
Elbow Design Short-Radius Long-Radius Sweeps
Clog Risk High Near Zero (Self-Cleaning)
Energy Usage High (due to friction) Optimized (VFD Demand-Control)

Why Choose EKG M&E Sdn Bhd?

  • Total 3D BIM Coordination: We model your factory's extraction paths in 3D to ensure "clash-free" installation around existing electrical trays, structural beams, and fire suppression systems.

  • Automated Blast Gate Integration: We can install smart gates that close when a machine is idle, focusing all available suction on the active workstations and further reducing energy costs.

  • Turnkey Validation: We provide full Testing & Commissioning (T&C), including Pitot Tube Traverse reports and Face Velocity audits required for your annual safety and environmental audits.
