UV-C Intensity Monitoring & Sensors | Precision Bio-Security by EKG (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd

In the 2026 Malaysian regulatory framework, UV-C Intensity Monitoring is no longer optional. Under the DOSH ICOP IAQ 2026 and the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Act (EECA), facility managers must provide documented proof that their UVGI systems are delivering the required germicidal dose. Because UV-C lamps lose roughly 10% to 20% of their output before they actually burn out, sensors are the only way to ensure 99.9% pathogen inactivation.

At EKG M&E, we integrate "Smart" UV-C sensing arrays into your AHUs and ductwork, providing real-time data to your Building Management System (BMS).

1. Silicon Carbide (SiC) Sensor Technology

Standard light sensors cannot survive the harsh, high-energy environment of a UVGI chamber. We utilize Silicon Carbide (SiC) photodiode sensors, which are specifically engineered for the 254nm germicidal spectrum:

  • Solar Blindness: These sensors are "blind" to visible light. This means they only measure the germicidal UVC output, preventing false readings from ambient mechanical room lighting.

  • Degradation Tracking: As the mercury vapor inside the lamp ages or as dust accumulates on the quartz sleeve, the SiC sensor detects the drop in microwatts per square centimeter (mu W/cm^2).

  • Placement Strategy: We mount sensors at the "Design Distance" (typically the furthest point of the air stream or the cooling coil surface) to verify that the minimum required Fluence is being maintained throughout the chamber.

2. VFD Optimization & The Cube Law

Under EECA 2026, sensors allow us to move from "Static" to "Dynamic" disinfection. We link UV-C intensity data to your Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) logic:

  • Intensity-Adaptive Airflow: If sensors detect that the UV lamps are nearing their end-of-life (lower intensity), the BMS can signal the VFD to slightly reduce the fan RPM. This increases "Dwell Time," ensuring the air still receives a lethal dose despite the lower lamp output.

  • The Cube Law Advantage: By using sensors to confirm the cooling coils are clean, we can confidently run the fan at a lower static pressure. Following the Cube Law, a 20% reduction in fan speed can slash your ventilation power draw by nearly 50%.

  • Energy-Saving Dimming: For advanced systems, sensors allow the ballast to "dim" the lamps during low-occupancy periods (detected by CO2 sensors), extending lamp life and reducing the Building Energy Index (BEI).

3. BMS Integration & Compliance Reporting

To satisfy DOSH 2026 audits, "Safe Air" must be quantifiable. Our sensor integration provides a continuous digital paper trail:

  • BACnet/Modbus Connectivity: Sensors communicate directly with the BMS. Facility managers receive "Low Intensity" alerts at 75% output, allowing for scheduled maintenance rather than emergency shutdowns.

  • Digital Logbooks: The system automatically generates monthly reports showing the average UVC intensity and total "Operating Hours," which are essential for Malaysian Green Building Index (GBI) and EECA certifications.

  • Safety Interlock Redundancy: Sensors act as a secondary safety check. If the BMS detects UVC intensity when the AHU access door is reported "Open," it triggers a high-priority safety alarm.

4. Mechanical Health: FFT Vibration Analysis

Sensors and high-output lamps are sensitive to the mechanical turbulence of high-velocity air. We employ Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) Analysis to protect these components:

  • Vibration Fingerprinting: We monitor the vibration signature of the sensor mounting brackets. If the fan generates a frequency that causes "Sensor Jitter" (leading to erratic readings), we program the VFD to "skip" that RPM range.

  • Resonance Frequency Locking: We isolate the sensor arrays from the motor's rotational energy, preventing premature electronic failure and maintaining 100% uptime for your bio-security monitoring.
