Ventilation Heat Exchanger | Industrial & HVAC Solutions by EKG (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd

In the tropical climate of Malaysia, a Ventilation Heat Exchanger is the primary mechanical barrier against energy waste. As buildings exhaust 24°C cooled air to maintain indoor air quality, they often suck in 32°C outdoor air, forcing chillers to work at maximum capacity. Under the 2026 Energy Efficiency and Conservation Act (EECA), the heat exchanger acts as a thermal recycler, capturing the "coolth" from the exhaust stream to pre-condition incoming fresh air.

At EKG M&E, we design and install high-performance heat exchange cores—from Sensible HRV to Latent ERV systems—ensuring your facility meets the mandatory 10 l/s per person fresh air rate with minimal power draw.

1. Thermal Core Technologies

The efficiency of a heat exchanger depends on its internal geometry and material science. We select the core based on your building's specific latent (humidity) and sensible (temperature) loads:

  • Fixed-Plate Counterflow Cores: These utilize corrugated aluminum or polymer plates to transfer heat between air streams. Because the paths are physically separated, there is zero cross-contamination, making them ideal for healthcare and laboratory environments.

  • Rotary Enthalpy Wheels: A rotating honeycomb matrix coated with a desiccant. As it spins between the exhaust and intake ducts, it transfers both heat and moisture (latent energy). This is the gold standard for managing Malaysia's 80%+ humidity levels.

  • Run-Around Coils: Ideal for Retrofitting where intake and exhaust ducts are far apart. A pumped water-glycol loop carries the thermal energy between two separate coils.

2. VFD-Optimized Airflow Control

A heat exchanger is only as effective as the air moving through it. We utilize Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) to ensure the system operates at the Best Efficiency Point (BEP):

  • The Cube Law Factor: Fan power consumption is proportional to the cube of its speed. By using a VFD to reduce fan speed by just 20% during off-peak hours, you can slash the ventilation energy draw by nearly 50%.

  • Static Pressure Reset: High-efficiency heat exchanger plates create significant resistance. The VFD automatically adjusts "static lift" as MERV 13 filters become loaded, maintaining constant airflow without wasting energy on "over-ventilation."

  • Bypass Dampers: During early Malaysian mornings when outdoor temperatures are favorable, the VFD-controlled dampers bypass the exchanger for Free Cooling.

3. IAQ & Biological Compliance

Modern heat exchangers must satisfy the DOSH ICOP IAQ 2026 standards for occupant health:

  • High-Efficiency Filtration: We integrate pleated filters to strip out PM2.5 haze and urban soot before they can "foul" the heat exchange surfaces.

  • Condensate Management: We design specialized drainage systems with UV-C sterilization to prevent "Bio-slime" and mold growth within the heat exchanger cabinet, ensuring the delivered air is pathogen-free.

  • Airtight Sealing: We use pressure-testing to ensure no leakage between the stale exhaust and fresh intake, preserving air purity.

4. Mechanical Health: FFT Vibration Analysis

To ensure your energy recovery isn't interrupted by mechanical failure, we employ Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) Analysis during our commissioning and routine maintenance:

  • Vibration Fingerprinting: We monitor the vibration spectrum of the supply and exhaust fans. We can detect shaft misalignment or bearing degradation months before a failure occurs.

  • Resonance Frequency Locking: We program the VFD to "skip" frequencies that cause the heat exchanger housing or ductwork to rattle, ensuring a silent environment for building occupants.
