Fresh Air Heat Recovery | Thermal Management with EKG M&E Sdn Bhd
In the high-humidity environment of Malaysia, bringing in "fresh air" often means introducing 32°C heat and heavy moisture into a 24°C office. Without Fresh Air Heat Recovery, your chillers must work at maximum capacity just to strip the heat from this incoming air. Heat Recovery Ventilation (HRV) acts as a thermal recycler, using the "coolth" of the stale air you are exhausting to pre-chill the fresh air you are bringing in.
At EKG M&E, we engineer these systems to meet the 2026 DOSH IAQ mandates (10 l/s per person) while drastically lowering the cooling load in line with the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Act (EECA).
1. Sensible vs. Total Heat Recovery
In Kuala Lumpur, we select recovery cores based on whether you need to manage just temperature or both temperature and humidity:
-
Heat Recovery Ventilator (HRV): Uses a fixed-plate exchanger (Aluminum or Polymer) to transfer "Sensible Heat." It lowers the temperature of incoming 32°C air to approximately 27°C. It is highly durable and ideal for areas with high internal pollutants like labs or print rooms.
-
Energy Recovery Ventilator (ERV): Uses a desiccant-coated "Enthalpy Wheel" to transfer both heat and moisture (Latent Heat). This not only cools the incoming air but also dries it, preventing your AC coils from being overwhelmed by tropical humidity.
2. VFD-Balanced Airflow Strategy
For heat recovery to reach its maximum efficiency (up to 80%), the intake and exhaust airflows must be perfectly balanced. We achieve this through Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) integration:
-
Pressure Compensation: High-efficiency recovery cores and MERV 13 filters create significant "Static Pressure." The VFD automatically adjusts fan speeds to maintain the required airflow as filters load up with dust.
-
The Cube Law Factor: By using a VFD to reduce fan speed by 20% during low-occupancy hours, you reduce the motor's power consumption by nearly 50%. This ensures your building stays pressurized and fresh without wasting electricity.
-
Bypass Control: During cooler Malaysian mornings, the VFD-controlled dampers can "bypass" the heat exchanger to provide 100% fresh "free cooling," bypassing the energy-heavy chillers entirely.
3. IAQ and Biological Protection
Fresh air recovery units can become breeding grounds for mold if not maintained. We integrate active defense layers into every installation:
-
UV-C Sterilization: We install UV-C lamps over the heat exchange core and drain pans. This disrupts the DNA of mold spores and bacteria, ensuring the "fresh" air remains sterile and compliant with DOSH 2026 biological limits.
-
High-Efficiency Filtration: We utilize MERV 13/14 pleated filters to strip out PM2.5 haze and vehicle emissions before they reach the heat exchange plates, keeping the system clean and efficient.
4. Mechanical Health: FFT Vibration Analysis
Heat recovery fans often run 24/7 on rooftops. To prevent unexpected noise or mechanical failure, we employ Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) Analysis:
-
Vibration Fingerprinting: We monitor the "vibration signature" of the fan motors. We can detect bearing wear or impeller imbalance caused by dust buildup months before a breakdown occurs.
-
Resonance Locking: We program the VFD to "skip" frequencies that cause the ductwork to rattle, ensuring a silent environment for the building occupants.
